The era of big data has unlocked tremendous possibilities for innovation and insight extraction. However, it has simultaneously raised profound concerns regarding individual privacy. Differential Privacy (DP) has emerged as a mathematically rigorous framework to protect sensitive information while preserving the utility of datasets. This article explores the concept of differential privacy, its real-world applications in big data ecosystems, and the multifaceted challenges associated with its implementation. Emphasis is placed on practical use cases, policy implications, technical hurdles, and future research directions, with particular attention to healthcare, finance, and smart cities. By balancing data utility and privacy guarantees, differential privacy holds promise for fostering trustworthy big data environments.
